Sexual Harassment in the Philippines

Updated: Jan 7, 2020

The comments president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, has been causing an uproar for around 5 years now. In 2016, Duterte was going to address to the public but at the rally their were about 40,000 female protesters. Some anti-government protesters have been speaking out about what the government is doing, in June 2016 the Duterte administration was ordering police to shot women protesters in the vagina. The women in the Philippines have started a #BabaeAko to protest how the president treats them. Now almost all of the women in the Philippines are protesting against how they are being treated in their own country. Duterte is bringing the countries economy down by a lot. The comment he is making to his Vice President's legs and jokes about raping the Miss Universe, or having a second wife is like having a spare tire in the trunk of your car. The message he is sending to the men/boys of that country is if I can get away with it so can you. Because of the #BabaeAko, Rodrigo Duterte declared that the next Chief of Justice can not be a woman. Ever since Duterte has taken power he has to comply undermined the past female president and other powerful female figures. It's sad how far the female empowerment has fallen in the Philippines. About 80-89% of women in the Philippines who are 18 years or older are affected by sexual harassment in their lives. The average age for this behavior to start is between the ages of 18-34 years old. Having said that 15% of boys between the ages of 12-17 sexually harass girls.
